Discipleship and Prayer

Prayer

At Sherwood Methodist Church we believe that prayer underpins everything that we do as a church community. It is an integral part of our activities, including of course our worship and Encounter Groups. We have a number of special events to encourage prayer, such as prayer days and prayer walks. In addition we have a number of regular prayer activities every week, these include a Saturday morning prayer meeting.

Prayer Ministry Team

The Prayer Ministry Team is a group of people who are available to pray with people over any matter. They are available during 10:30am Holy Communion services but are happy to pray with anyone when the need arises.

Text-a-Prayer - 07847 461059

You can leave prayer requests by voicemail or text on this number. All requests will be prayed for on Saturday or Sunday mornings, or fed into the Prayer Chain if appropriate.

Knit and Natter

Every other week on a Wednesday evening, a group of us meet to knit and natter together, and whilst doing so knit prayer shawls. As the prayer shawls are being knit, the person who it is being knitted for is held in prayer by the group. Prayer shawls have previously been knitted for people suffering bereavement, ill health, new babies etc.

Encounter Groups

Encounter Groups are fundamental to life at Sherwood Methodist Church. They provide an opportunity to regularly meet with others in small groups, and are similar to 'cells' in other churches. We believe that meeting together in these groups is a good way to express Christian community.

  • A number of groups meet weekly in people's homes and at church
  • All groups follow the same theme/programme
  • There is a mix of worship, prayer, Bible study and discussion
  • Groups take part in social activities
  • This is an opportunity to encounter Jesus, support each other and make Jesus known in the community of Sherwood

Sherwood Men's Group

Sherwood Men's Group offers men linked to the church opportunity to meet, share fellowship and have fun together. The group meets bi-monthly on a Saturday morning to share breakfast at Samuel Hall Wetherspoons. In addition they sometimes enjoy:

  • walks in Derbyshire
  • ten pin bowling
  • skittles
  • 20/20 cricket matches at Trent Bridge
  • pitch and putt
  • weekends away with mens' groups from other churches
